  • Description: Free tax preparation assistance by IRS trained volunteers to prepare 2023 income tax returns for individuals and working families at VITA sites with a total earned annual income of $66,000 or less. The VITA program provides free electronic filing (e-file). The coalition also helps educate the public on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The tax deadline is Monday, April 15th, 2024.   • Eligibility: No age restrictions. Total household income for 2023 must be $66,000 or less. Drop-off appointments require an active email address for each client (returns will be reviewed and signed online). Filer MUST attend appointment (a designated Power of Attorney may attend on behalf of the filer, if authorized prior to tax preparation). VITA sites cannot prepare:- Married filing separately- Clergy- Rental income- Cancellation of debt (other than non-business credit card debt)- Bankruptcy- Self-employment with expenses of more than $35,000 or inventory (app-based work, such as driving for Uber/Doordash or shopping for InstaCart, is classified as contract work/self-employment)- Military personnel and spousesAdditional restrictions:- Basic sites (Empower Yolo & Health Ed Council): cannot prepare returns for self-employed individuals, people who itemize deductions, people who sold stocks, or people who had health insurance through Covered California- Out of state filings: online only- Registered domestic partners: online and drop-off only.- Health savings account: online and drop-off only- Amendments prepared at these sites only: Ethel Hart, Grant Union, La Familia, Mexican Consulate, United Way CCR. - All listed sites can prepare prior tax years, 2019 - 2023, except Pivot Sacramento and South Natomas CC, which can only prepare for tax years 2022 & 2023, and Health Ed Council and UC Davis Students in VITA, which can only prepare tax year 2023.
  • Requirements: - Government-Issued Photo Identification for ALL Tax Filers.- Social security card for each person on the return (including spouse and/or dependents) or provide copies (paper or electronic) of social security cards or an acceptable substitute such as Form SSA-1099, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) Letter and/or any other verification issued from the SSA. SSA verification documents with truncated SSN (ex: ***-**-1234) will be accepted at the site coordinator's discretion. - A copy of prior years' tax return.- All wage and other income documents received from one's employer or benefits provider (W2's, 1099, etc.). Additional documents, if applicable: - Proof of one's bank account number and routing number to use for direct deposit of the refund (blank/void checks are acceptable).- For advanced sites: proof of health insurance. If purchasing health insurance through Covered California, bring Form 1095-A (received from Covered California).-If claiming Child/Dependent Care Credit, the child care provider's Tax ID number (EIN or SSN), name, address, and phone number are required. Dependent adults/children do not need to attend the appointment. - For advanced sites: if itemizing (Sch. A), documents for expenses such as mortgage interest statement (Form 1098), property tax bill, charitable contributions, medical expenses, Vehicle Registration bill from DMV, documentation of any sales taxes paid on big items (car, boat, etc.).- Social Security Card Replacement: if caller needs replacement cards, refer to the United States Social Security Administration - Card Center (enter through building rear entrance).
