  • Description: 2023 Tax Return Due Date: Monday, April 15th, 2024. Some VITA sites are open year round for those filing late.


    Program provides free tax help to individuals and families in Santa Clara County. To view service locations, use the VITA site locator on the website.

    In-Person Services - Clients complete a screening/interview and then see an IRS-certified tax preparer. Another expert volunteer checks the tax return for quality and also reviews it with the client. Individuals are advised to call in advance for details on the following information:
    • If an appointment is required or if the site accepts walk-ins
    • If the site helps with same-day tax preparation vs drop-off (in person or remote pick up)

    Online Services - Clients answer intake questions and upload documents on GetYourRefund.org (available in English and Spanish). An intake volunteer schedules a phone call with the client, then the tax return is prepared. Another expert volunteer checks the return for quality and then reviews the return over the phone with the client. Clients e-sign the tax return, and then the return is filed.


    Additional supports available varies by location:
    • Individuals with ITINs (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) are eligible for the California Earned Income Tax Credit.

  • Eligibility: Individuals or families with an annual household income of $64,000 a year and can state open all in the Bay Area Counties of Santa Clara, Solano, San Mateo, Marin, Napa, and San Francisco.

Social Security cards for you, your spouse, AND dependents ---- If anyone does not have a Social Security Number, you can bring the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter ---- An official letter from the IRS (SSA-1099 form) can be accepted in place of a Social Security card . Birth dates for everyone on the tax return . W-2s from all jobs . All 1099s, 1098s, and any other tax forms from other jobs, colleges, or other organizations . Calculation of income and expenses from self-employment or cash income, if applicable . Your household's health coverage information ---- Health Coverage Statements: Forms 1095-A, B or C . Childcare provider information, if applicable ---- You will need the total amount paid to the daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number) . Last year's tax return, if you have it . Savings AND checking account numbers, as well as routing number for direct deposit of refund
