The Annual Conference has since grown into one of the largest and most diverse affordable housing and homelessness conferences in the country. Housing California became a broader organization in 1988 as a result of the growing state advocacy work in affordable housing.As a leader in advancing the interests of the most vulnerable, Housing California has been a place for local and state groups to convene and align their advocacy around housing and homelessness. The organization has a history of powerful leadership and accomplishments in state policy. Housing California played an integral role in the passage of Propositions 1C and 46, general fund allocations for housing, and a host of legislation on homelessness and land use policy. Over the last several years, we have built a reputation as an organization that works across issue areas and brings together diverse networks and coalitions. The most dynamic areas of this work have been: 1) our leadership at the intersection of housing, transportation, and climate change that culminated in a set of victories on the spending plan for California's Cap and Trade Program in 2014; 2) lifting up powerful voices in advocacy by creating a replicable community organizing model in affordable housing developments known as the Residents United Network; and 3) our state electoral campaign work in collaboration with labor, business, and communities to pass new investments in affordable housing.Mission and GoalsSince 1988, Housing California has been working to prevent and end homelessness and increase the variety and supply of safe, stable, accessible and permanently affordable homes. Housing California accomplishes its goals through education, advocacy, and outreach.How do we achieve our goals Educate lawmakers and their staff about how their proposed legislation affects the issues of housing and homelessness to create widespread, long-term stabilizing impacts on California's housing. Advance the field of community development through our Annual Conference (the largest affordable housing and homelessness conference in the nation), networks, trainings, and media and communications. Marshal the power of our wide and growing network of supporters and members who deal with other facets of community development, so that those we serve can access resources beyond housing -- from jobs, schools, and public safety to healthy food and transportation. Organize residents of affordable homes to use their powerful voices to influence policies that affect their lives and include them in the fight so California meets housing needs of all. Build strong, broad coalitions and be a thought leader about housing and homelessness issues among homebuilders, nonprofit developers, homeless service providers, the health and mental-health communities, transportation experts, energy-efficiency experts, criminal justice reform advocates, child welfare workers, and others.We concentrate on three issues: Land Use: Influencing where homes are built; making sure land is used efficiently. Budget and Funding: Increasing and protecting public investment in affordable homes, which spurs private investment. Homelessness: Improving outcomes for programs that prevent and end homelessness and increasing/protecting funding for innovative, cost-effective, and proven solutions.
