  • Description: The California Telephone Access Program, also known as California Phones, is a state mandated program the provides free specialized telephones to anyone living in California that has difficulty hearing, seeing, moving, speaking or remembering. We have phones that are amplified, big buttoned, captioned, portable, with picture dialing and many other features. California Phones is paid for by a surcharge of a few pennies a month on all Californian's phone bills. To qualify for the program, you have to live in California, have telephone service and get a doctor or other certifying agent's signature on our application. You can download an application on our website, www.CaliforniaPhones.org or by calling 1-800-806-1191 and have an application sent to you. There are no income guidelines or age limit. It is one phone per person. We also provide California Relay Service which assists anyone that is deaf or has a speech difficulty to make phone calls. The Speech to Speech program is a part of the CRS, which provides assistance re-voicing calls for people that have may have had a stroke or are not very easily understood. They can be reached by calling 711. California Phones had 13 full and part-time service centers throughout the state. If you are unable to go to one, the phones can be sent to you via UPS. The nearest service center to Humboldt County is in Redding. The Redding Outreach Specialist can do presentations for your group or organization, have a table or booth at events, and do Distribution Events, where phones are given to customers who have completed the application process. At Distribution Events, we sometimes coordinate with audiologists that provide free hearing screenings as well.
