  • Description: D.A.R.E. is a cooperative effort of the Placer County Sheriff's Department, local school districts, parents, and the community. All four work together to help our children make the right choices concerning drug use, peer pressure, and avoiding negative behaviors. One of the unique features of D.A.R.E. is the use of uniformed sheriff deputies as instructors. D.A.R.E. officers are assigned to a real classroom. The officers selected for the program are talented in human relations and communication skills. The officers are specifically trained to present a 10-week instruction unit, which culminates in a special graduation ceremony. The D.A.R.E. program is designed to avoid scare tactics. Positive and substantive, it relies on accurate information and an upbeat approach. D.A.R.E. officers not only teach students in the classroom, but conduct faculty workshops and present programs to parent/teacher organizations. This approach provides a constructive and highly visible presence to the students involved in D.A.R.E. and the community. The need for an effective education program to inoculate students against the threat of drugs and poor choices is critical to the well-being of our children and their future. Such a program is a long-term commitment of the Placer County Sheriff's Department.
