  • Description: Offering the California Earned Income Tax Credit (Cal EITC) starting with calendar year 2015 tax returns. This is a new refundable tax credit that puts money back in the pockets of California’s working families and individuals this tax season. If taxes are owed, the Cal EITC reduces the amount of taxes that might be owed and may allow for a refund when taxes are filed. If no taxes are owed, the Cal EITC tax credit will provide a tax refund when taxes are filed.

  • Eligibility: An individual may be eligible for the CalEITC if they have taxable earned income within certain limits (see chart below), AND have a valid social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) AND they lived in California for more than half the tax year. The individual must also be at least 18 years of age OR have a qualifying dependent. If married, the individual, their spouse, and any qualifying dependents must each have a social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN) AND they must not use the “married/RDP filing separate” filing status in addition to meeting the criteria above. 2023 Annual Income Limit for all applicants: $30,950/year Maximum CalEITC allotment based on number of qualifying children in the household: No Children: $285 1 child: $1,900 2 children: $3,137 3 or more: $3,529 A qualifying dependent must meet the following criteria: -They must be the taxpayer’s child or stepchild (whether by blood or adoption), foster child, sibling or step sibling, or a descendant of any of them. -They must have the same residence as the taxpayer in California for more than half the tax year. Certain exceptions apply. -They must be younger than the taxpayer AND either under the age of 19 at the end of the tax year, OR under the age of 24 if they are a full-time student for at least 5 months of the year. A permanently and totally disabled child may be included at any age. -Have a social security number (SSN) or individual taxpayer identification number (ITIN)
