  • Description: Offering a program for senior volunteers to work closely with law enforcement in a variety of non-hazardous activities helping to support public safety and prevent crime in Butte County communities. The S.T.A.R.S. patrol the unincorporated areas of Butte County in marked Sheriff's vehicles equipped with two-way radios and cellular telephones.Patrol units in Chico, Oroville, Magalia and Gridley take crime reports, perform daily home checks of citizens who are on vacation, pick up found property, assist with traffic control at an accident or other emergency, provide extra patrol for school zones, and more. The S.T.A.R.S. volunteers offer free home security checks to persons who are on vacation or away from their property. They also perform office duties such as answering phones, dispatching, basic clerical work, writing crime reports, assisting walk-in citizens and more. Volunteers assist with Neighborhood Watch, children's safety programs and community events. S.T.A.R.S. members help supervise citizens in graffiti eradication and clean up. They are also on call to assist law enforcement agencies with response in the event of floods, fires, or other natural disasters.

  • Eligibility: Volunteers must be 50 years of age or older and able to donate four hours of free time per week to the program. Applicants must fill out a written application, have an oral interview and be able to pass a background investigation. S.T.A.R.S. volunteers must attend a Basic Training Academy and purchase and maintain their own uniform.
