- Description: Offers public education about fire and injury prevention. A variety of presentations and educational programs on many safety topics like burn proofing your home, water safety, fire extinguisher use, flammable liquids, and more are offered to community groups. The department will also help residents who need assistance with changing smoke detector batteries (batteries are not provided). The Chico Fire Department also provides the 9-1-1 Safety Pals program to children in local schools in Kindergarten through 4th grade and conducts tours of fire stations, fire fighting apparatus, and the fire training center by appointment. A summer camp for youth with focus on personal life safety is also offered in collaboration with CARD. The Fire Prevention and Life Safety Bureau additionally provides the following services: Advice to the public regarding Fire Code interpretation and issuance of fire permits. Determination of cause and origin of fires and participation on the Butte County Arson Task Force. Monitoring installation and sale of approved fire extinguishers. Enforcement of city fireworks ban. Issuance of all Fire Code occupancy permits. Providing fire reports to the public and assistance to citizens following fire or other emergencies. Child and youth caused fire-setter counseling program. Weed abatement and lot cleaning program coordination with Community Development Department. Investigation of citizen complaints.
