  • Description: Provides adult literacy program of the San Francisco Public Library. Trained volunteer tutors provide free one-on-one tutoring to English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Services included:

    Learner and Tutor Services
    • Free one-on-one tutoring
    • Professional training for tutors
    • Instructional resources for tutors and learners
    • Ongoing evaluation and instructional support
    • Referrals to other educational programs
    • Two dedicated computers with phonics software for learner use
    • Skills-based workshops for learners
    Learner Objectives
    • Improve basic skills to pass the GED exam or High School Equivalency test.
    • Enroll in higher education classes
    • Obtain jobs or earn promotions
    • Access public library and other community resources
    • Participate in the election process
    • Fulfill personal goals that enhance their lives at home, at work, and in the community
    • Increase self-esteem
    • Develop skills and strategies to help their children succeed in school

    Also offers as an air respite and heat respite center.
    These services are not available if a power outage occurs in this facility.
